OVERSIGHT BOARD HOLDS
FIRST ECONOMIC FORECAST SYMPOSIUM

San Juan, PR – May 15, 2025 – The Financial Oversight and Management Board for Puerto Rico announced that it will host the inaugural Economic Forecast Symposium. 

The symposium on May 21, 2025, 10:30 am AST/EDT at El Capitolio, Edificio Medicina Tropical in San Juan, will give the Oversight Board, the fiscal team of Governor Jenniffer González Colón, and the members of the Legislative Assembly, including the respective leaders of the House and Senate Budget and Ways and Means Committees, an overview of the economic outlook for the United States and Puerto Rico. 

The objective is to establish a transparent and public macroeconomic forecasting process to assist the Oversight Board, the Executive, and the Legislature in reaching a consensus on Puerto Rico’s fiveyear economic outlook that would inform and guide future fiscal and budget planning. The symposium will be held annually thereafter as part of the reformed fiscal and budget plans. 

“Economic and revenue forecasting are critical for fiscal and budget planning,” said the Oversight Board’s Executive Director Robert F. Mujica, Jr. “It is important for the Government and the Oversight Board to hear different perspectives and views on the United States and Puerto Rico economies going forward to establish a consensus forecast that will help us develop a realistic and effective budget. That is why this symposium will become a crucial element of Puerto Rico’s fiscal transformation and reformed financial planning processes.

The presenters are:

  • Joelle Scaly, Economic Policy Advisor, Microeconomics, Federal Reserve Bank of New York
  • Gustavo Rojas Matute, Assistant Director, Moody’s Analytics
  • José J. Villamil, Chairman & CEO, Estudios Técnicos
  • Sergio M. MarxuachPolicy Director and General Counsel, Center for a New Economy
  • José Caraballo Cueto – Economist & Professor, Graduate School of Business, University of Puerto Rico at Rio Piedras

The experts will share their analyses and projections regarding the current and future economic conditions of Puerto Rico and the United States. Discussions will cover critical areas such as tax revenues, economic trends, and financial markets, with the goal of providing valuable insights to shape Puerto Rico’s budget process and financial policies. Future symposiums will include economic and revenue projections and be incorporated into the annual Commonwealth budget and fiscal plan process.
