U.S. Department of Energy and Oversight Board Introduce Energy Information Website rutaenergeticapr.org to Provide Information and Transparency; Tracking Modernization and Federal Funding

San Juan, PR – January 10, 2025 – The Financial Oversight and Management Board for Puerto Rico and the U.S. Department of Energy together created the new website Ruta Energética para Puerto Rico to provide information about Puerto Rico’s energy transformation and modernization, and Federal Government funding to repair, remediate, and stabilize the energy system.

“Today we introduce Ruta Energética para Puerto Rico, at rutaenergeticapr.org, so everybody in Puerto Rico and elsewhere can track the progress energy players together make in working towards getting Puerto Rico’s energy system in the shape Puerto Rico deserves,” said the Oversight Board’s Executive Director Robert F. Mujica, Jr. “Where do we stand? How much money is spent? What’s next? The people of Puerto Rico deserve to know, and the goal of rutaenergeticapr.org is to provide this transparency.”

“I would like to thank the U.S. Department of Energy and Secretary Jennifer M. Granholm for their help and support in developing this website that informs with facts and data,” Mujica said. “The transformation from the old system to reliable electricity is not done, and just as the modernization process continues, we will continue to build, expand, and update rutaenergeticapr.org regularly with new data and more information.”

U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm said, “The launch of the Ruta Energética para Puerto Rico website marks a significant step forward in ensuring transparency and accountability as we work to rebuild Puerto Rico’s energy system. This platform offers access to timely and accurate information about reconstruction projects, investments, and progress, reflecting the reality of the grid today. Together, we are building a stronger, more resilient energy future for Puerto Rico, and this tool is a testament to our commitment to keeping the people of Puerto Rico appraised of both progress and areas where more swift action is still needed.”

Decades of underinvestment and a series of natural disasters left Puerto Rico with a dilapidated grid, outdated power plants, and far behind in converting to cleaner electricity. The energy system is now

undergoing a comprehensive transition to provide more reliable, resilient, and cleaner electricity for the people and businesses of Puerto Rico.

Congress authorized over $17 billion to rebuild the grid, provided by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), and other agencies and departments. rutaenergeticapr.org provides an overview of the available funding and tracks spending.

The new website also provides information on building a modern energy supply and Puerto Rico’s grid modernization programs, including program description, goal and progress where stated, allocated funding amount, funding source, performance period, and project status; and number of projects under construction or completed.
